Lindley Hall Door Propping Policy

The general rule is that if a locked door is to be propped open, all room occupants (those assigned space in the room) must know all other room occupants and be willing and able to police the room when the door is open. This policy is intended to strike an appropriate balance between convenience and security.

Upstairs labs and offices (2nd-4th floors):
Doors may be propped open at any time, with permission of all present, as long as at least one of the room occupants is present. Doors should be closed whenever room occupants are not present.

Upstairs office suites:
Doors may be propped open at any time during normal business hours (they are unlocked during normal business hours anyway) but should not be propped open at any other time.

LH125, LH004, LH035:
Doors should not be propped open at any time.

LH115, LH101:
Doors should not be propped open at any time, except during classes and scheduled meetings.

All other basement and first-floor rooms:
Rules for upstairs labs and office areas apply. Extra diligence is required, however, since these floors are more open than the other floors.

Outside doors:
Outside doors should never be propped open, whether they are locked or not.

Stairwell doors:
All stairwell doors are equipped with electro-magnetic retainers that can be used to hold these doors open during business hours. During the evening and weekend hours, as well as during a fire emergency, these door will automatically close. Fire regulations prohibit the propping of these doors using any other mechanism.
